740-141 Music Techniques 1

Year 1 Music.

Credit points: 20.0

Coordinator: Professor Bebbington.

Contact: 1-hour lecture and 1-hour tutorial.

Timetable: Double semester.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students are expected to understand the Western musical tradition, to recognise and write contrapuntal and fundamental harmonic textures in two, three and four parts and to recognise and write diatonic harmonic textures in four parts.

Content:

Written techniques basic to the understanding of the Western musical tradition: the study of harmonic and contrapuntal principles in two, three and four parts.

Assessment:

(a) Weekly written exercises (50 per cent); (b) end-of-year written examination (50 per cent). Students must pass (b).
