740-140 Aural and Keyboard Studies

Year 1 Music.

Credit points: 15.0

Coordinator: Ms Leibrandt

Contact: A 1 hour lecture and a 1 hour tutorial per week and (for non keyboard players) a one hour keyboard class per week.

Timetable: Double semester.

Objectives:

  1. to facilitate inner hearing via rhythmic and melodic sightreading exercises from both the textbooks and a broad cross-section of the music repertoire.
  2. to develop basic keyboard skills.

Content:

  1. Singing, playing and transcription of complex melodies, rhythms and harmonic progressions.
  2. Basic keyboard exercises, pieces and transpositions for students not enrolled in a keyboard instrument in Practical Study 1.

Assessment:

Weekly exercises and tests (50 per cent); end-of-year Viva voce (50 per cent).
