Year 1 Medicine.
Contact: Three lectures a week and one tutorial a fortnight. Students without VCE Physics take an additional tutorial each fortnight.
Timetable: First semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject, students should:Comprehend: the laws of motion, properties of solid, liquid and gaseous matter and thermodynamics; the physics of light and sound and the psychophysics of vision and hearing; electromagnetism, elementary circuits and electronics; properties of ionizing radiation and radioactivity.
Have developed: skills to analyse and solve physical problems.
Appreciate: the importance of rational, critical and independent thought in physical science and in the understanding of medical science.
Content:
Physics, illustrated by applications to biological systems and clinical technology. Selected topics in the areas of mechanics, properties of matter, thermal physics, optics, acoustics, electricity and magnetism, atomic physics and nuclear physics.
Assessment:
A 3-hour written examination at the end of the semester, plus written assignments during the semester. Students must satisfactorily complete assignment work as specified at the start of the semester.
