521-022 Functional Biochemistry

Year 2 Medicine.

Contact: Four lectures a week and eight hours of laboratory classes and practice classes/tutorials a fortnight.

Timetable: Second semester.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students should:

Comprehend: the principles of control of biochemical systems at the genetic and gene expression levels, at the cellular and intracellular levels, and by the endocrine system; the chemical structure, metabolic effects and interactions of hormones; integration of metabolism between tissues under different conditions including fasting and starvation; nutritional requirements and the biochemical implications of nutritional diseases and deficiencies; the major effects of inborn errors of metabolism; applications relating directly to biomedical problems.

Have developed:skills to analyse the changes which may occur in disorders of biochemical control systems.

Appreciate: the role of the chemical basis of cellular functions in understanding health and disease; the influence of nutritional factors on health and disease.

Content:

Cellular control, tissue specialisation and the integration of metabolism, normally and during fasting and starvation; mechanisms of action and interrelationships of hormones; regulation of hormone secretion. Nutritional requirements of humans during various physiological states; nutritive value of foods; parenteral nutrition; nutrition in obesity and vitamin and mineral deficiency. Human molecular genetics, including familial aspects of cancer and other genetic diseases, recombinant DNA techniques and genetic engineering; Control of gene expression related to differentiation and carcinogenesis. Laboratory and practice classes and computer-assisted instruction reviewing lecture topics.

Assessment:

A 2-hour end-of-semester written examination (85 per cent); laboratory (10 per cent) and practice class (5 per cent) work.
