521-021 General Biochemistry

Year 2 Medicine.

Contact: Three lectures a week and eight hours of laboratory and practical classes/tutorials a fortnight.

Timetable: First semester.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students should:

Comprehend: the terminology of biochemistry; the principles and essential information regarding the chemical structure and properties of important cellular constituents and the digestion, absorption, transport, metabolism and uses of the major nutrients; the correlation of chemical structure with cellular function; the interrelationships and regulation of metabolic pathways; the biochemical interactions between tissue systems.

Have developed: observational and organisational skills in obtaining data using modern biochemical procedures and in reporting the findings; skills in analysing and evaluating biochemical experimental data.

Appreciate: the factors which influence the significance of laboratory results; the role of experimentation in the development of biochemical knowledge.

Content:

Thermodynamics of living systems and biochemical adaptation. The digestion of lipids, carbohydrates and proteins, and their metabolism in the body. The structure and metabolism of nucleotides and nucleic acids; their role in the synthesis of proteins. specialised topics in relation to the structure and function of various carbohydrates, proteins and lipids. Laboratory classes and practice classes/tutorials Separative and analytical procedures in modern biochemistry; experimental design and factors which influence the significance of results. Handling biochemical data and conducting literature searches.

Assessment:

A 3-hour end-of-semester written examination (85 per cent) including material on protein biochemistry from first year and material related to practical and practice classes. Laboratory work (10 per cent) and practice work (5 per cent).
