Year 4 Physiotherapy.
Coordinator: Professor J McMeeken and Ms G Webb
Contact: Comprises contact hours for all fourth year clinical subjects.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject, students should:Comprehend: the importance of integration of theoretical knowledge with appropriate clinical decisions and actions; the requirement for comprehensive treatment plans for physiotherapy; principles of professional and effective communication with patients and professional colleagues.
Develop: skills in differential assessment, including expertise in the use of measurement systems, an ability to interpret diagnostic findings and develop an appropriate management plan; an awareness of indications and contraindications; the ability to select and perform techniques in a safe effective manner; the ability to evaluate treatment effectiveness and to modify treatment as necessary; skill in providing appropriate patient education and plans for future treatment; team participation and effective written and verbal communication.
Appreciate: the role of the physiotherapist in multidisciplinary clinical settings; the importance of understanding relevant pathophysiology to enable safe and effective patient management; the effects of other factors in patient management such as social, family, occupational, pharmacological; the importance of critical and innovative thought in the clinical practice of physiotherapy; the importance of continuing self learning and development.
Content:
All clinical components of physiotherapy with emphasis on the consolidation of management and clinical problem solving skills
Assessment:
Two 40-minute clinical examinations at end of year (50 per cent each). Students must achieve a satisfactory result in each of the clinical examinations in order to pass the subject.
