513-409 Research Methods 3

Year 4 Physiotherapy.

Coordinator: Ms Sara Carroll and Dr I Story.

Contact: 30 hours consisting of 1 x 2 hour tutorial, 4 hours of guided self learning, 6 hours of clinical discussions with tutor and 18 hours of planning and implementation.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students should:

Comprehend: the value of objective measurement in the evaluation of clinical practice; the varying designs for single case studies; the necessity for careful planning prior to the execution of a research project.

Have developed: skills in objective clinical measurement; skills in the planning and implementation of a single case study; written scientific communication skills.

Appreciate: the complexities of collecting objective data in a clinical situation; the importance of selecting a valid assessment tool; the importance of clinical research as a means of justifying physiotherapy practice.

Content:

This subject provides students with an opportunity to use skills gained during Research Methods 1 and 2. Students must design, conduct and write up three single case studies of patients they treat during their fourth year clinical placements.

Topics such as design, measurement and outcome evaluation which were initially presented in Research Methods 2 will be revised during the preliminary tutorial. The tutors will be available to visit all students during their designated clinical placements to provide guidance during both the planning and implementation phases as required.

Assessment:

Three single case studies (no more than 1,500 words each) must be submitted within four weeks of the completion of the clinical placement in which they were conducted. Each case study is worth 33.3 per cent. Students must submit all three assignments in order to receive a pass grade.
