513-408 Physiotherapy Principles and Practice 3

Year 4 Physiotherapy.

Coordinator: Mr P Lew and Mr H Wajswelner

Contact: 60 hours.

Timetable: First semester

Objectives:

This subject will further develop knowledge and practical skills in manipulative physiotherapy and the management of sporting and occupational injuries, have achieved the general objectives as listed in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy 1. On completion of this subject, students should:

Comprehend: the aetiology, physiology and medical management of muscle and neural tissue injuries as well as intra/extracapsular vertebral and peripheral joint injuries; the physiotherapy management of the above-mentioned physiotherapy conditions; the rationale behind the systematic and differential assessment, treatment and overall management of musculoskeletal disorders; the notion of 'joint feel'.

Have developed: expertise in the use of manual measurement systems for the objective assessment of human movement; expertise in the perception of normal and abnormal accessary movements in vertebral and peripheral joints; the capacity to perform differential assessment, be aware of contra-indications, to select and execute appropriate treatment techniques; the ability to evaluate treatment effectiveness and to modify treatment as necessary.

Appreciate: the value of specificity in manual therapy approach to treatment; the need for continuing responsibility for self learning and development of skill.

Content:

This subject will further develop the student's understanding of neuromusculoskeletal conditions. More highly skilled soft tissue and joint mobilisation and manipulations will be developed, including the use of high velocity thrust techniques and neuromeningeal techniques. The emphasis will be on occupational, private and sports medicine practice.

Assessment:

Continuous assessment employing mastery learning (50 per cent); Practical examination (50 per cent)
