513-407 Paediatrics

Year 4 Physiotherapy.

Coordinator: Ms E Williams.

Contact: 4 Weeks clinical practice of an average of 27 hours per week (total: 110 hours)

Objectives:

The subject will build on a knowledge of normal development from the previous subjects Growth, Development and Ageing, Human Movement Development, Physiotherapy Principles and Practice and Community Health. The subject will also develop aspects of paediatric management integrated into units of Musculoskeletal, Neurological and Cardiothoracic Physiotherapy given in Year 3. On completion of the teaching program in Paediatrics, students should:

Comprehend: the clinical application and physiotherapeutic techniques with respect to the principles of normal development which encompasses the motor system and other related systems; the principles of physiotherapy clinical management of children presenting with abnormal development and/or movement problems as related to musculoskeletal, cardiothoracic and neurological conditions; the family perspective in relation to having a child with illness or disability.

Have developed: communication skills and rapport with children, adolescents and their families; clinical observation skills of the child and adolescent; skills to analyse and record assessment findings; skills to determine physiotherapy aims and specific objectives for children and adolescents; the ability to plan and deliver treatment programs to children and adolescents.

Appreciate: the difference in management between children and adults; the specific needs and the complex nature of children with long term and/or multiple problems; the significance of the grieving process within the families of children with life threatening illness or long term disabilities; the importance of the interaction between children and their families and the family units as a whole; the importance of physiotherapy as part of the interdisciplinary team involved in the management of children and adolescents; the need for continuing responsibility for self-learning and development.

Content:

The student will be introduced to major paediatric conditions within the musculoskeletal, cardiothoracic and neurological systems. Assessment, treatment, principles and physiotherapeutic techniques appropriate to the major paediatric conditions will also be incorporated. Students will be introduced to the concept of management of children with long term and/or multiple problems.

Assessment:

During clinical rotation: Clinical assessment (60 per cent); Case and topic presentation (20 per cent). End of Rotation: Annotated bibliography (20 per cent). Students must pass both clinical and theoretical components of the assessment in order to pass the subject.
