Year 2 Physiotherapy.
Coordinator: Professor J McMeeken and Mr G Murray
Contact: Two hours of lectures/seminars and equivalent of one hour tutorial/workshop per week.
Timetable: First semester
Objectives:
On completion of this subject, students should:Comprehend: The principles of oral and non-verbal communication skills and interpersonal processes in physiotherapy. Issues in health from the perspective of different age groups, gender, cultural and ethnic backgrounds and the disabled in the community. The impact of illness and disability in the community.
Have Developed: The ability to communicate effectively.
Appreciate: The importance of effective communication in physiotherapy practice. The diversity of individuals in the community and their differing perspectives on health and illness.
Content:
Interpersonal processes and issues in health care.Communication Skills: Attending behaviour, questions, observation and active listening. Communicating effectively with people from different backgrounds in a personal and professional context. The opportunity to practise skills with role play and videotaping
Health Issues in the Community: Adolescent health, contemporary issues, coping with acute trauma and illness, and chronic longterm illness: sexuality, different beliefs about sexuality, dealing with patient's anxieties about sexuality; the influence of gender on health, health policy and research; aboriginal health; ethnic and cultural issues affecting health and illness.
Assessment:
A 2-hour end-of-semester written examination. Performance on videotape interview.
