513-204 Research Methods 1

Year 2 Physiotherapy.

Coordinator: Dr I Story.

Contact: One hour lecture and a one hour tutorial per week.

Timetable: Second semester.

Objectives:

This course forms the first of a three stage sequence of training in research methods in physiotherapy. On completion of this subject, students should:

Comprehend: The principles of research methods and examples of their application in clinical research and practice.

Have Developed: Skills in statistical computing and in critically evaluating published research.

Content:

Criteria for evaluating published research. Types of research designs. Internal and external validity. Descriptive statistics. Measurement in physiotherapy. Z-scores. Confidence intervals. Significance testing. Tests of differences between groups. Tests of relationships between variables.

Assessment:

1.5 hour examination (75 per cent). 1000 word statistical computing assignment (25 per cent).
