511-502 Integrated Dental Practice

Year 5 Dental Science.

Contact: A total of 405 hours including seminars and clinical experience in all aspects of general dental practice.

Objectives:

By the end of the Integrated Dental Practice teaching in fifth year the dental student should:

Comprehend: the philosophy of total oral health care for each patient and the interactions of general dental practice with speciality care in the overall treatment plan for the individual; the biological, behavioural and ethical principles of clinical dental services and their application to total oral health care for each patient; the diversity of settings in which general dental practice may be delivered; the diversity of clinical techniques and dental materials available to meet each individual's specific oral health needs; the limitations of particular treatment modalities

Have developed: skills in the examination, diagnosis, radiography, treatment planning and management of an individual seeking routine dental health care; competency and expertise in providing general dental care to an individual; skills in evaluating success and failure in clinical dentistry; skills in working as part of a comprehensive health team; the ability to communicate with the patient about their oral health status, treatment options and potential outcomes; the ability to communicate about clinical cases with other health providers; the ability to assess and manage a patient who has collapsed; a commitment to ethical practices, quality assurance in dentistry and life-long continuing education.

Appreciate: the role and responsibilities of the general dental practitioner in the provision of comprehensive total patient care; the need for referral in those situations which cannot be successfully managed in general dental practice or require specialist advice or intervention; safety in general dental practice; the need for constant evaluation of techniques, peer review of processes and the application of scientific rigour and principles to the resolution of clinical problems

Content:

Clinical experience in total patient care at both the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne and selected clinical teaching centres and hospitals; Observational experience in private general practice; Seminars, demonstrations and assignments in special and general aspects of clinical dental practice.

Assessment:

At the end of semester two - A) four 15-minute viva voce examinations and continuing assessment of clinical work on patients that the student has treated in each of endodontics, general practice, fixed prosthodontics and removable prosthodontics (20 per cent). B) a 30-minute viva voce examination in oral medicine and oral surgery, a 2-hour clinical photographic slide recognition examination in oral medicine and oral surgery a 30-minute case presentation with the patient present; a 15-minute case report presentation without the patient in attendance (20 per cent). C) continuing assessment during the year in paediatric dentistry, orthodontics, care of the special patient and gerodontics and a 2-hour clinical photographic slide recognition examination; (20 per cent). D) a 25-minute viva voce examination in integrated treatment planning; (25 per cent). E) one essay (2,500 - 3,000 words) to be submitted by the end of semester 2 (15 per cent). A pass in each of A, B, C, and D is required for an overall pass in this subject.
