Objectives:
At the conclusion of this subject the student should:
- have an understanding of the legal and technical requirements associated with undertaking cadastral surveys in Victoria
- be capable of conducting a cadastral survey and preparing the corresponding documentation in the form of maps, plans and reports
- demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the legal and administrative procedures associated with land development in Victoria
Content:
Cadastral Law and Surveying. 26 hours of lectures and 13 hours of tutorials and practical work. History of land settlement in Victoria with respect to surveying. Detailed examination of the land tenure systems in Victoria. Searching survey and title information. Boundaries, occupation and survey marks. Legal obligations and requirements imposed upon cadastral surveyors. Methods of performing cadastral surveys and re-establishing title in urban and rural areas. Cadastral survey computations and associated documentation.Land Development : 26 hours of lectures and 13 hours of tutorials and practical work. Dealings in land: adverse possession, bringing land under the Act, amendment of title, easements, past practices (Stratum/Strata/Cluster titles). Surveyor-General consent applications. Land acquisition and compensation procedures. Land Subdivision: Subdivision Act 1988 and associated regulations; planning and development controls and procedures; local government practices; building subdivision; documentation. Roads: creation; widening, closure, sale. Mining tenure in Victoria; survey requirements; extractive industry leases. Law relating to riparian and water rights.
Assessment:
Not more than six hours of written examinations and tests and not more than the equivalent of 40 pages of written assignments and reports on practical work. The relative weighting of the assessment components will be published at the commencement of the subject.
