Objectives:
At the completion of the unit students will:
- have a basic competence in computer programming using a procedural language
- be able to formulate algorithms into working computer programs to solve engineering problems
- be aware of numerical errors inherent in computational schemes
Content:
Computer programming using C or Fortran or other suitable language; numerical modelling; approximations and errors; roots of equations; numerical solutions of linear algebraic equations; curve fitting; splines; interpolation and extrapolation; numerical differentiation and integration; pre- and post-computational analysis; graphical representation of results.
Assessment:
A 90-minute examination; tutorial tests and assignments not exceeding 30 pages equivalent.
