436-104 High Performance Vehicles - Design and Manufacture

Credit points: 7.1

Contact: 13 hours of lectures, 13 hours of tutorials and computer practice classes and 13 hours of laboratory experiments

Timetable: First semester

Objectives:

On completion students should understand that advanced engineering problems involve the application of both science and art. Through exposure to computer simulation and laboratory testing they should comprehend the concepts involved in simultaneous engineering and have developed basic skills in designing, manufacturing and testing.

Content:

Introduction to the science and art of the design and manufacture of high performance vehicles, such as racing cars, high speed aircraft and boats. 'Hands on' experience in component or systems analysis, design, materials selection and manufacture and testing of engines, controls, transmissions, suspensions, aerodynamics and body structures using computers, workshops and test rigs. Whole of life performance considerations such as quality, reliability, repairability, recycleability and environmental impacts.

Assessment:

A one-hour test and two reports not exceeding 10 pages equivalent.
