Credit points: 5.00
Contact: 24 hours of lectures and practice classes
Timetable: Second semester
Objectives:
Upon completion of the unit students will: know - the important components of a LATM study and how they relate to the transport planning process; the basic techniques used in LATM; the major urban issues affecting parking policy and design; the common types of simulation models used in traffic engineering; the steps involved in road safety audits and evaluation of road safety programmes; appreciate - the traffic and social functions of residential streets; the important factors used when evaluating traffic simulation models; the relationships between engineering, education and enforcement aspects of road safety programmes; the role of non-motorised modes in urban transport; the environmental impacts arising from transport and their implications for the sustainability of urban travel; understand - the principles associated with designing off-street car parks; the value and limitations of summary data on factors contributing to accident frequency and severity; the basic principles of facility design for pedestrians and bicycles; the role of Traffic Demand Management in addressing environmental concerns; be able to - estimate the trip and parking demand for specific land use sites; identify the components and interactions within the model development process; generate random deviates from common statistical distributions.
Content:
Environmental impacts of transport. Transport safety. Parking systems. Local area traffic management. Simulation modelling of traffic systems. Transport logistics.
Assessment:
The subject will be assessed on the basis of three written assignments submitted during the semester.
