Objectives:
At the conclusion of this unit students will: have an understanding of the application of geotechnical engineering to solid and liquid waste disposal and waste management; be aware of the properties of waste materials; have an appreciation of the effects that liquids other than water have on the properties of soils.
Content:
Properties of waste materials. Effects of chemicals on soil properties. Waste disposal systems. Regulations governing waste disposal and management. Site selection. Groundwater contamination. Tailings dams. Liners. Leachate collection systems. Use of slurry trenches. Ocean waste disposal. Remediation.
Assessment:
One assignment of not more than 5,000 words and a two-hour open-book examination at the end of the semester. Weightings: 10% assignment, 90% examination.
