Objectives:
To enable students to: design simple engineered timber structures, including material selection and durability considerations; design structural elements in high-performance concrete, and to deal with the associated materials technology. To acquaint students with: the properties of fibrous composites, and the parameters for their successful use; the principles governing the design of cable and membrane structures, including a general study of material properties.
Content:
Topics related to the use of composite materials in structural engineering cable structures, membrane structures, including high performance structural concrete, engineered timber structures, fibre reinforced plastics and other construction materials.
Assessment:
two assignments of up to 2,000 words each (25%): a two-hour examination (75%).
