Credit points: 7.1
Coordinator: Assoc. Prof. R. L. Hughes
Prerequisite: An Honour in Mathematics for Engineers Unit 3.1 (or equivalent)
Contact: 26 hours of lectures and 13 hours of tutorials
Timetable: First semester
Objectives:
On completion of this course students should have:
- a background in interchanging problems between variational form (as is used in the finite element method of numerical analysis for instance) and differential equation form
- an understanding of the methods for evaluating difficult integrals which commonly occur in engineering situations
Content:
Part 1 Calculus of Variations: Euler's equation, integral and algebraic constraints, Sturm-Liouville problems, Ritz method, numerical methods, adjoint problems.Part 2 Advanced Complex Analysis: Series expansions, residues, contour integration. Asymptotic methods, stationary phase, steepest descent, WKB theory.
Assessment:
One three-hour examination at the end of first semester. Plus additional tests and assignments to a maximum value of 10%.
