Timetable: Semester one
Objectives:
At the conclusion of this subject, students should be able to analyse for the stress state in simple structural elements (such as beams, columns and shafts) for a variety of loading conditions. They should also be able to determine the deformations that are produced by these loading conditions.
Content:
Material Behaviour and Definitions, Transformation of Stress and Strain, Basic Properties of Sections, Flexural Behaviour, Deflection analysis, Superposition, Indeterminacy, Shear in beams, Torsion of circular shafts, Short columns, Long columns.
Assessment:
One two-hour written examination (75%); Practical classes and Laboratory work (25%); Hurdle requirement of a pass in 4 Mastery Learning TopicsAdmission to the examination is conditional upon passing each of four Mastery Learning topics. Students may repeat each topic up to four times to gain a pass.
