Objectives:
At the conclusion of this subject students should have an appreciation of the scope of possible natural disasters and engineering failures and an understanding of ways in which these can be mitigated. They should appreciate the relevance of emergency procedures and the role played by the insurance industry.
Content:
Natural disasters including fire, flood, drought, cyclones, earthquakes, landslides. Engineering failures including structural collapse, dam failure, subsidence. Disaster mitigation and emergency response and recovery. Insurance aspects.
Assessment:
One two-hour written examination (50%); two written assignments, maximum 3,000 words each (50%).
