411-111/211 Processing Minerals To Metals

Prerequisite: None for students gaining entry to the Engineering or Science Faculties. This unit is also available for Community Access Programmes.

Content:

Features of the Australian minerals industry. Historical background to the minerals industry. Geology and mineralogy of common types of ores. Mineral dressing. Selection of processing alternatives. Environmental and energy management. Recycling. Production of gold. Manufacture of iron and steel. Production of copper, lead and zinc. Recovery of aluminium from bauxite Plant visits.

Assessment:

One two-hour examination at the end of Semester one.
