Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of 411-102 Chemical Process Analysis 1
Contact: 39 hours for the semester consisting of 16 hours of lectures and 23 hours of tutorials - 3 hours per week
Timetable: Second semester
Objectives:
On completion students should be able to handle basic chemical engineering energy balance calculations. Students will be able to perform calculations to estimate stream temperatures and heating and cooling duties for chemical processes.
Content:
Concept of conservation of energy is developed as the basis for determining energy flows in and around chemical processing systems; evaluation of enthalpy changes with and without phase change; simplified energy balances for batch, steady-state and adiabatic systems; energy balances in reacting systems; simultaneous material and energy balances; simple calculations involving combustion of fuels.
Assessment:
A two-hour examination at the end of second semester.
