411-101 Industrial Process Engineering

Credit points: 7.1

Coordinator: Assoc. Prof. D. G. Wood and Ms Joan Gravina

Prerequisite: None for students gaining entry to the Engineering or Science Faculties. This unit is also available for Community Access Programmes.

Contact: 39 hours for the semester made up of 3 plant visits (13 hours) and 26 hours of lectures at 2 per week

Content:

Hazards and Safety in the Process Industries - case studies. The responsibility of the Process Engineer for managing hazards, safety and the environment. Occupational Health and Safety issues. The anatomy of a process including basic flow diagram development. Examples of actual processes illustrated via visits to plant sites. Introduction to capital cost estimation and Process Economics.

Assessment:

three plant visit reports of no more than 3,000 words will be assessed for 50% of the overall work. One two-hour examination accounts for the remainder of the assessment.
