400-103 Introduction To Engineering

Credit points: 7.1

Contact: 13 hours of lectures, 26 hours of Engineering Options (2 options, each of 13 hours)

Timetable: First and second semester

Objectives:

On completion students should have gained insights into a number of facets of engineering practice and research and an appreciation of the scope of the profession of engineering, its history and some of its influences upon the community.

Content:

Two 13-hour Engineering Options: short courses, given to small groups, in which a topic of engineering practice or research is treated in depth. 13 lectures on the history of engineering innovations, engineering and the environment, introduction to engineering economics and modern engineering practice.

Assessment:

A report of no more than 2,000 words on each of the Engineering options (66%). An essay of no more than 2,000 words or equivalent assignments on the lecture material (34%).
