Physics

Overview

The School of Physics in the Faculty of Science offers a number of subjects intended for, or appropriate to, the BEd (Secondary) course. In all the subjects offered the principal aim is to give students a sound understanding of the foundations and methodology of physics itself, but at the same time present material relevant to teaching of physics.

For information about other subjects offered by the School of Physics, but not detailed below, you should consult the entry "Physics" in the Science Faculty volume of this Handbook.

One-year Physics

Physics 640-161/162 a well-rounded account of most of the major branches of physics, is intended for students who do not have a solid background in physics and mathematics. It is suitable for students who want to incorporate a good introduction to physics in a course primarily devoted to other science disciplines.

Courses with Physics in two or more years

The other subjects detailed below are designed for intending physics teachers and for other students wishing to study physics beyond the first-year level. The aim is to enable intending physics teachers to gain a thorough grounding in physics plus the necessary mathematics.

The preparation required for most of these subjects is Physics 640-141/142 (or both Physics 640-150 and Classical Physics 640-277 pre 1995), together with appropriate mathematics studies. Students interested in pursuing further physics studies, but who do not have this preparation, should consult staff in the Education Faculty Office.

Suggested second to fourth year subject combinations are:

Second Year

Third Year

Fourth Year
