Handbook 1996 : Faculty of Education (Parkville Campus)
Math. & Stats. : Next:Media Arts | Prev:Library & Info. Studies | Search | Help
Most Mathematics and Statistics subjects are the responsibility of the corresponding departments of the Faculty of Science. However, all Mathematics 'link' studies and Teaching Methods subjects for BEd (Secondary) students are the responsibility of the Faculty of Education. Students considering a career in mathematics teaching should ensure that their studies cover pure and applied mathematics and statistics.
BEd (Primary) students who enrolled before 1996 can select Mathematics subjects as listed for the courses below. Careful planning of subject selection is necessary, however, to avoid timetable conflicts with the compulsory School Studies and School Experience subjects. BEd (Primary) students are also advised to refer to the "School Studies" section of this Handbook for B-level and C-level School Studies subjects.
Mathematics and Statistics subjects available in 1996 for these courses are set out in the tables below together with advice on subject choices.
Semester 1 Points Semester 2 Points Stream 1 (Introductory level) 618-161 12.5 618-162 12.5 Stream 2 (Intermediate level) 618-141 12.5 618-142 12.5 Stream 3 (Exemption Test required) 618-121 12.5 618-122 12.5
The selection of stream is determined by VCE mathematics subjects studied, the grade achieved in these subjects and performance in Diagnostic and Exemption Tests. If you are intending to enrol in any first year subjects in 1996 you should contact the School of Mathematical Sciences First Year Learning Centre before the start of Orientation Week to arrange to sit the appropriate test. For each of these basic streams there are the following additional studies in Mathematics or Statistics that may be taken according to which stream is followed.
Stream 1 could be combined with either of the following subjects (each 12.5 points):
Stream 2 could be combined with any of the following subjects:
Stream 3 could be combined with any of 617-141, 617-142, 618-130, 618-132, 619-100.
It is not possible to gain credit for more than one of 617-141, 617-142, 619-100, or for both of 618-130 and 618-132. Entry into 618-132 requires the invitation of the Head of the Department of Mathematics, and is normally restricted to students with a high level of achievement in 618-121.
Students who have followed Stream 1 should seek advice on appropriate subjects for second year. You would normally be expected to complete 618-142 (semester 1 stream) and 618-200 (semester 2 stream) in your second year before being permitted to enrol in any other 200-level Mathematics subject.
Students who have followed Stream 2 would normally choose the following subjects:
Semester 1 Points Semester 2 Points Mathematics 618-200 13.5 618-231 12.0 Statistics 619-201 16.5 619-202 16.5
Second year students may also take the Mathematics subjects 618-212, 618-232, 618-242, 618-251, 618-252, 618-261, 618-262, and the Statistics subject 619-230. Consult the individual subject entries for details of prerequisites and corequisites.
Students who have followed Stream 3 are not permitted to enrol in 618-200. Apart from this, you have more flexible choices, and should consult your course advisors for guidance. It would normally be recommended to include all of 618-231, 619-201, 619-202.
Semester 1 Points Semester 2 Points Mathematics (1) 618-380 15.0 618-352 15.0 Statistics 619-330 15.0 619-202 16.5
Fourth year
Semester 1 Points Semester 2 Points Link Studies (2) 485-399 8.3 485-300 8.3 485-398
For Computer Studies subjects see table in "Computer Studies" section of this Handbook.
Other second- and third-year level Faculty of Science subjects could also be chosen (see the Faculty of Science section of this Handbook for details); some of these are listed below.
