Graduate Diploma in Education


Overview

The Graduate Diploma in Education provides an initial teacher education course for intending secondary teachers. It is a one-year full-time course in which you study School Experience, Education Studies and two Teaching Methods.

Whilst the course is designed primarily to equip you for teaching positions in secondary schools, it can also provide a valuable preparation for a career in community education, TAFE colleges, the public service and industrial training.

The strength of the course is the wide choice of programs available which accommodate different interests in areas of teaching and key theoretical issues.

This course is in the process of being phased out. The last intake into the course will be in 1996. All students will be able to complete the requirements of the course if normal academic progress is maintained.


Course Objectives

On completion of the Graduate Diploma in Education course graduates should be able to:


Proficiency in English

A high degree of proficiency in all aspects of English is desirable for prospective teachers. Students may be required to undertake language tests as part of the process of selection.


Entry requirements

Applicants must have qualified for a degree or a diploma in a recognised university or tertiary institution, and must have completed the requirements for the Teaching Methods intended (see below).


Course structure

To satisfy the requirements of the course, you must satisfactorily complete the three components of the course:

Education Studies 55.0 points

School Experience 25.0 points

Methods of Teaching 20.0 points

Total 100.0 points

School Experience
You are required to undertake a minimum of 45 days of supervised School Experience. Normally you will be placed in schools for three 3-week blocks.
Methods of Teaching
You must undertake the equivalent of two single methods.
Education Studies
Education Studies are a compulsory component of the course.

Methods of Teaching

You are normally required to study two Methods of Teaching, and to demonstrate your ability to teach them at the secondary school level. However, students who have specialised in the study of Mathematics may take Mathematics as a double method.

In selecting your teaching subjects, you should keep in mind the importance of having a strong enough academic background to enable you to teach senior classes. Set out on the following column is a guide to the minimum academic background for teaching subjects.

Methods of Teaching prerequisites

English
English sub-major.
Languages Other Than English
Single Method: Completion of three years of approved University language study at post-VCE level. Students with other qualifications will need to be assessed by a language department at an Australian University as being of equivalent proficiency.
Double Method: Single method requirements in two languages.
The following Languages other than English are available: Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese.
Social Studies
A major study in one of the following and one year of study in at least one other or a sub-major in two of the following: History, Geography, Economics, Politics, Sociology, Anthropology, Modern Government, International Relations, Criminology.
Teaching English as a Second Language
Sub-majors in at least two distinct school subject areas including a sub-major in a Language Other Than English or Linguistics or one part of each.
Biology
Sub-majors in two branches of the biological sciences.
Chemistry
Sub-majors in two branches of the chemical sciences which may include Biochemistry.
Mathematics
Single Method: Mathematics, or Mathematical Statistics sub-major. Double Method: Sub-majors in two branches of Mathematics or major in one branch of Mathematics plus part 1 of studies in another branch of Mathematics. (Computer Studies/Information Technology does not meet this requirement).
Physics
A sub-major in Physics.
Science
A sub-major in Science, Applied Science or Engineering with at least one year of study in two approved sciences.

Credit

Students who have satisfactorily completed part or all of another course of study at tertiary level may be given credit up to a maximum of 50 per cent of the Graduate Diploma in Education.


Leave of absence

Leave of absence will not be available in 1996.

Teaching Methods

Teaching Methods in Languages Other Than English

The following methods of teaching in Languages Other Than English are available:

Teaching Methods in Mathematics

Mathematics methods can be taken in single, or double arrangements. (See Prerequisites). All students undertaking Mathematics as a teaching method must enrol for Mathematics Core Method.

The following methods of teaching in Mathematics are offered:

  1. Teaching Method in Core Mathematics
  2. Teaching Method in Additional Mathematics

Teaching Methods in Science

The following methods of teaching in Science are offered:

  1. Teaching Method in Biology
  2. Teaching Method in Chemistry
  3. Teaching Method in Physics
  4. Teaching Method in Science

All students enrolled in either of these methods will attend the combined science seminar/workshop.
