920-108 Vietnamese 1A (Beginners')

Credit points: 18.75 1st year, 16.7 2nd and 3rd year

Coordinator: Giuong Van Phan.

Contact: Three lectures and two tutorials each week.

Timetable: First semester.

Objectives:

To develop students' oral, aural, writing and reading abilities to equip them with a reasonable level of bilingual proficiency and to raise their socio-cultural awareness.

Content:

A comprehensive introduction to contemporary Vietnamese, written and oral/aural, for students with little or no knowledge of the language. Teaching will involve large and small group work, the use of audio-visual equipment, language laboratory classes as well as lectures and seminars in aspects of Vietnamese cultural heritage.

Assessment:

Continuous oral, aural and written exercises (40 per cent); one 1,500 word essay in English on cultural aspects (20 per cent); end-of-semester written exam (20 per cent); oral/aural exam (20 per cent).
