Elementary Stream Music subject.
Credit points: 16.7

Prerequisite: 740-215 (or 491-275) Music (Practical) B2, or approved equivalent.
Contact: A 2-hour seminar and weekly lessons on the first study instrument, a 1-hour second instrument lesson each week and an end-of-year 20 minute recital.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate a high level of performing skills on their first and second practical study instruments as a combined result of specialised tuition and regular practice;
- demonstrate an extensive knowledge of repertoire and its associated musical styles;
- demonstrate a high level of musical development and self-confidence in a professional environment, with improved stage deportment, and awareness in both solo and ensemble presentation;
- perform music in contemporary idioms, and music by Australian composers;
- perform at a professional level on their own instruments and recognise standards of excellence in performance on other instruments, in preparation for a career in teaching music; and
- demonstrate competence in self analysis and self assessment in learning and performance.
Content:
Develop professional performance skills on a first and second study instrument through tuition, regular practice and weekly participation in a performance seminar; introduction to self assessment of performance; increased knowledge of repertoire and musical styles for both instruments; and presentation of a self assessment at the end of each semester and a first study recital at the end of the year.
Assessment:
Regular weekly practice for the individual and group first study lessons (20 per cent); performance and participation in the Performance Seminar (25 per cent); a three page self assessment at the end of year recital (5 per cent); practice for the second study lesson and a 10-minute test on the second study instrument at the end of each semester (25 per cent); and a 20-minute end-of-year recital (25 per cent). Students must complete all performing and project assignments and should pass each of the five component areas: Performance Seminar, First Practical Study, Second Practical Study, self assessment and End-of-Year Recital.
