Elementary Stream Music subject.
Credit points: 16.7
Coordinator: Ian Godfrey.
Prerequisite: 740-214 (or 491-274) Music (Practical) B1, or approved equivalent.
Contact: A 2-hour lecture/demonstration, a 3-hour rehearsal/performance and a 2-hour demonstration each week.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate a high level of understanding and expertise in group music-making, through an advanced study of conducting, orchestration, arranging in various genres, acoustics and analysis, and demonstrate practical knowledge and appreciation for the musical and social elements of rock, jazz, popular and contemporary music and sufficient knowledge of skills and resources to allow further study and teaching in these areas;
- demonstrate a high level of ensemble performing experience under the direction of an experienced professional musician and the personal qualities, organisational abilities, musical skills and repertoire associated with the particular musical genre;
- direct similar school ensembles; and
- demonstrate extended and diverse performing skills through involvement in various small performance oriented electives.
Content:
Participation in a Large Directed Ensemble, a Performance Skill Elective, and study of the practical application of conducting, arranging/composition, acoustics and analysis in the Group Music Class.
Assessment:
Performance and participation in a Large Directed Ensemble (30 per cent); Performance Skills Elective (20 per cent); active participation in the Group Music lecture/demonstrations (50 per cent). Students must complete all assignments and projects and must pass each of the three component areas.
