Elementary Stream Music subject.
Note: Credit will not be granted for this subject and for more than one of 740-313 (or 491-366) Music C4, 740-315 (or 491-368) C6 and 740-317 (or 491-369) C7.
Credit points: 8.3
Coordinator: Ros McMillan.
Prerequisite: 16.7 points of Music B or C subjects and completion of at least one year of Improvisation Workshop and Jazz and Rock Ensembles as Performance Skills Electives.
Contact: A 2-hour rehearsal/demonstration each week.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate developed skills in composing and arranging for, rehearsing, directing and administering, and performing with, jazz and popular music ensembles;
- demonstrate developed specialist practical skills and knowledge of various jazz and popular music styles and their evolution; and
- demonstrate developed awareness of resources and techniques for teaching and further study in the chosen areas.
Content:
A study and practice in jazz and popular music, focusing on ensemble repertoire, skill development and directing.
Assessment:
Successful participation in and direction of an ensemble (70 per cent); a study of jazz and popular music in education, with two assignments, equivalent to 2,000 words (30 per cent). Students must complete all assignments.
