Prerequisite: Wood B, or approved equivalent.
Contact: A 4-hour discussion/studio session and two hours of studio access each week.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- extend the use of wood as a material;
- show a knowledge of and skills related to, the possibilities and constraints of this material;
- show some proficiency in the safe use and maintenance of a range of hand-held power tools and machinery;
- initiate and develop individual design ideas through the use of the problem-solving process, using wood as the main material; and
- show an awareness of health and safety requirements in the studio/classroom situation.
Content:
A study that develops and extends previously acquired skills and knowledge associated with the use of wood and related technologies to design and make products. The safe use, diversity and maintenance of machine and hand tools is covered in more depth. Appropriate information on technology studies is related to the school environment.
Assessment:
A folio of four completed projects: one carved, one turned, two constructed (80 per cent); a 1000-word written assignment and a studio resource book (20 per cent).
