Prerequisite: Teaching Method in Mathematics - Junior 1C and at least 25 points in Maths subjects at the Group 2 level.
Pre/Corequisite: (For each Teaching Method D) Satisfactory completion of Education Studies C, School Experience C and a minimum of 250 points credit in the course. Concurrent enrolment in Education Studies D and School Experience D12.
Contact: A 90-minute lecture/seminar/workshop session each week for a total of 20 weeks.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate a knowledge of mathematics curriculum statements and issues;
- demonstrate a knowledge of how students learn mathematics;
- demonstrate a knowledge of a variety of appropriate mathematical learning/teaching strategies;
- demonstrate a knowledge of suitable materials and resources for teaching mathematics in Years 7-10;
- demonstrate a knowledge of strategies for the assessment and reporting of mathematical achievement; and
- demonstrate the ability to plan and evaluate a sequence of lessons for a given Year 7-10 mathematical topic.
Content:
An overview of issues, teaching and learning problems and appropriate teaching methods important to effective learning in secondary mathematics, Years 7-10.
Assessment:
Short weekly assignments (20 per cent); two school-based assignments (20 per cent); an innovations assignment (10 per cent); a major planning assignment (40 per cent); collection and organisation of teaching resources (10 per cent).
