Timetable: First semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- apply computers and related technology to the learning/teaching of mathematics in primary schools; and
- select and evaluate software suitable for mathematics learning in primary schools.
Content:
The use of microcomputers in primary mathematics programs to enhance the teaching/learning of number, space, measurement, chance and data, algebra. This will be facilitated through the use of such tools as spreadsheets, databases and interactive software. Selection and evaluation of appropriate mathematics software. Examination of current and future computer use in mathematics in primary schools. Interfacing the computer to other appropriate technology.
Assessment:
One written action research assignment of 2,500 words (40 per cent); software evaluation report (10 per cent); seminar presentation (20 per cent); three laboratory activities (30 per cent).
