Contact: A 2-hour lecture/discussion/workshop session each week for a total of 15 weeks
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- apply learning theories and develop teaching strategies appropriate to Outdoor Education;
- understand how pupils learn physically, cognitively, and effectively in outdoor education;
- develop safe and effective learning environments in the classroom and outdoors;
- plan experiences involving the section of appropriate teaching strategies and resources and the management of learning;
- develop classroom skills in outdoor education; and
- supply assessment theory and practice in outdoor education.
Content:
A study of teaching strategies and models of learning appropriate to education in the outdoors. Topics will include: theory of motor skill acquisition, legal liability and duty of care, methods of evaluation.
Assessment:
An assignment of approximately 2,000 words (50 per cent); participation in class including class paper and micro-teaching (50 per cent).
