Prerequisite: Any two 11.1-point Group 3 Mathematics or Statistics subjects. Students should have passed or be currently enrolled in Education Studies D.
Contact: Two 2-hour lecture/seminar/tutorial classes each week for six weeks.
Timetable: First semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- show an improvement in organising, preparing and teaching new material about real-world applications of mathematics, which they in turn can use in the classroom;
- formulate simple problems from practical situations, as well as use some established mathematical models; and
- appreciate the relevance of mathematics to students present and future lives and the idea that mathematics is still developing today.
Content:
Students prepare seminar papers and assignments on selected topics in mathematical modelling under the supervision of a staff member.
Assessment:
Written assignments in total not more than 100 pages (70 per cent) class participation (5 per cent) and a seminar presentation of not more than one hours duration (25 per cent). Students must submit all assignments.
