Note: This subject qualifies as a Link Study and is only available to fourth year BEd (Secondary) students.
Credit points: 13.9
Coordinator: Marie Smyth.
Prerequisite: At least 22.2 points of Computer Studies subjects at Group 2 level, or approved equivalent.
Contact: Two 2-hour lecture/seminar/workshops each week for nine weeks.
Timetable: Second semester.
Objectives:
On completion of the subject the student should be abe to:
- demonstrate a knowledge of computer use in all secondary curriculum areas;
- demonstrate an ability to evaluate computer applications for educational purposes;
- demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to assist with the coordination of a computer program in a school; and
- articulate their opinions on ethical and equity issues associated with computer use in schools.
Content:
Computer uses in education; the social implications of such uses. Strategies for using a computer in a classroom, and associated methods and goals. Aspects of computer science needed to underpin these strategies, both for teaching with computers and teaching about computers. Strategies for evaluation of current curriculum software. Current developments in telematics and telecommunication. Ethical and equity issues in computing in schools.
Assessment:
An essay of approximately 1,500 words (25 per cent); an individual project equivalent to approximately 2,500 words, under the direction of the lecturer (25 per cent); seminar presentation (25 per cent); literature review (25 per cent).
