Prerequisite: Health Education B1, Human Biology and Nutrition or equivalent, and a pass or concurrent enrolment in Human Sexuality C or School Studies C14.
Contact: Two 2-hour lecture/seminars each week.
Timetable: First semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- understand approaches to health advancement, health care and disease prevention in Australia including the role of schools;
- confidently approach the implementation of health education curriculum in Victoria, P-12;
- understand health promotion initiatives in Australia and overseas;
- compare the Australian health care system with that of other developed countries; and
- identify the work of international agencies, such as the World Health Organisation, with particular reference to health problems of developing countries.
Content:
Further study of personal and community health including the Curriculum Standards Framework and the VCE Health Education Study; school policy and programs; good teaching practices; the school as part of the local community; community health issues and resources; public health; the changing face of health care; health inequalities; global perspectives of health.
Assessment:
Three assignment tasks of equal weight totalling 4,500 words or equivalent.
