Prerequisite: Any two 11.1-point Group 3 Mathematics or Statistics subjects. Students should have passed or be currently enrolled in Education Studies D.
Contact: Two 2-hour lecture/seminar/tutorial classes each week for six weeks.
Timetable: Second semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to
- identify the major issues affecting the direction of mathematics education; and
- specify how aspects of a major issue can be incorporated within their own teaching practice.
Content:
General issues affecting the present direction of mathematics education, with particular emphasis on Victoria, including major themes developed by current school mathematics curriculum projects.
Assessment:
Up to six short assignments on designated issues each equivalent to 600 words (50 per cent); and a major assignment requiring independent exploration of one issue affecting mathematics education equivalent to 2,500 words (50 per cent). Students must satisfactorily complete all assignments.
