485-236 Science Education B2: Learning in the Laboratory

Note: This subject can be taken as a Link Study, usually in Year 3.

Credit points: 11.1

Coordinator: Terry Harrison.

Prerequisite: 50.0 credit points of Group 1 Science subjects from Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics and/or Physical Science, or approved equivalent.

Contact: Up to 24 hours of lectures and 24 hours of lecture/workshop/practical/fieldwork sessions except during periods of school experience.

Timetable: Double semester.

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

Content:

Practical experience in laboratory techniques used in science teaching in secondary schools. Aspects of laboratory management including the care and maintenance of laboratory animals and their use in schools; safety; general liability and ethical issues. Uses of computers in the science curriculum. Appropriate strategies for the assessment and evaluation of laboratory and field work.

Assessment:

Three major assignments of approximately 1,000 words each (30 per cent each); minor assignments (10 per cent). Satisfactory completion of each category of assessment.
