485-232 Learning Area (Primary): Mathematics 3

Year 2 Bach. Teaching.

Prerequisite: Learning Area (Primary) Mathematics 2.

Contact: 4 hours of lectures/workshops each week.

Timetable: First semester.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

Content:

An exploration of the creation of mathematics curriculum that achieves an appropriate balance of all types of mathematical activity. The skills and attitudes required for using mathematics in an investigative manner. Teaching mathematics, computer and calculator technology. Students will use their knowledge of the mathematics curriculum, available resources and of children's thinking to plan teaching sequences and analyse them in ways developed in previous mathematics curriculum subjects.

Assessment:

A 1200 word literature review (30 per cent); planning, documentation and analysis of a sequential program for teaching a topic over a year (2,000 words equivalent) (50 per cent); collection and documentation of resources for teaching mathematics with computers and calculators (800 word equivalent) (20 per cent).

Hurdle Requirement: Satisfactory completion of weekly tasks and seminar preparation.
