Prerequisite: Health & Environmental Studies A or approved equivalent.
Contact: Two 1-hour lectures and one 3-hour practical session each week, including laboratories, gymnasium activities, outdoor settings, or other equivalent activities, e. g. excursions, resource centre visits.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge and skills required for specialist work in health and environmental studies;
- demonstrate an understanding of skill development, safety and challenge in outdoor education;
- understand the nature, manufacture and usage of chemicals in the environment;
- understand the theoretical bases of human movement as expressed in exercise physiology, biomechanics and skill acquisition;
- understand the role of microbes in the environment and their effect on health and industry; and
- develop a deeper understanding of their own sexuality and that of other people and understand current issues associated with sexual health.
Content:
Integrated studies of human sexuality and sexual health, movement science, outdoor education, health and the immune system; a study of the environment in which humans live; risk management, chemicals (e. g. food manufacture, rocks, crystals, mining processes, effects of chemicals such as mercury and lead), microbes (industrial, promoting/impeding health), socio-economic factors and health.
Assessment:
Four major essays or assignments of 2,000 words each (70 per cent); two 1-hour tests (20 per cent) and several short tests totalling 2-hours (10 per cent).
