Prerequisite: Health and Environmental Studies A, or approved equivalent.
Contact: A 2-hour practical class each week.
Timetable: Second semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- perform various dance steps and dances from a variety of dance areas and ethnic groups;
- attend and actively enjoy participation in a variety of community dance settings;
- demonstrate a reasonable level of movement involving rhythm, intricate foot patterns and group formations;
- develop an understanding of movement analysis and the relationship of Body, Energy and Space; and
- introduce various areas of dance to children in schools or to community groups.
Content:
Participation in: ethnic folk, ballroom, square, modern, Latin American and creative dancing. Information on appropriate dance styles, music and culture influencing the dances. Presentation of teaching methods for dance. Practical study of movement principles. Dance making.
Assessment:
Performance of dance steps and dances (40 per cent); a resource file of dances and dance information (30 per cent); a written assignment (30 per cent).
