485-135 Human Sexuality A

Note: Students are required to attend all classes and are encouraged to participate actively in the program.

Credit points: 5.6

Coordinator: To be advised.

Contact: Five consecutive working days of formal classes during non-teaching periods of the year. Classes include workshops which allow students to discuss the material in relation to their own backgrounds, lectures, audio-visual material, role play and excursions. Each program is usually team-taught by two staff members.

Timetable: First or second semester.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

• demonstrate deeper understanding of their own sexuality, and that of other people; and
• demonstrate an increased confidence in dealing with sexual matters which are likely to arise in a school setting.

Content:

A study of human sexuality within an inter-disciplinary framework. Topics include: sexual development through the life cycle, inter-personal relationships, ways of communicating, making and breaking relationships, sexual preference, contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, rape, child abuse and pornography.

Assessment:

An essay or research paper of approximately 2,500 words on an approved topic (100 per cent). An evaluative statement of at least 1,000 words of the student's responses and experiences in the course, derived from records kept during the program must also be completed. Students must perform satisfactorily in each area of assessment and attend all classes.
