Credit points: 15.0
Coordinator: Gary Asp.
Corequisite: School Experience 1.
Contact: One 1-hour lecture and one 2-hour workshop each week.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- demonstrate mastery of those parts of the Number and Chance and Data strands and their everyday applications which are relevant to primary teaching;
- demonstrate an understanding of how children construct mathematical knowledge in these strands;
- demonstrate an awareness of materials and activities which are appropriate for developing children's understanding of primary school mathematics topics; and
- demonstrate an ability to design activities which facilitate children's achievement of selected learning outcomes in the areas of number and chance and data.
Content:
This subject deals with mathematical content in the areas of Number and Chance and Data. By engagement with challenging mathematical investigations, students will deepen their own knowledge of these strands and study the way in which children think and learn about them. Developmental and constructivist perspectives on mathematical learning will be introduced. The use of calculators and other appropriate technology will be considered. Current Victorian curriculum documents will provide a focus for the discussion of primary mathematics. Students will participate in the analysis and design of short classroom activities.
Assessment:
Two written tasks, one of which involves work with a small group of children, equivalent in total to 2,000 words (20 per cent each), plus two written 1.5 hour examinations (one mid-year and one final exam; 30 per cent each). Hurdle Requirement: To gain a pass in this subject, students must satisfactorily complete a compulsory test of basic mathematics competence in Number and Chance and Data.
