Year 1 Bach. Teaching.
Credit points: 10.0 Staff: David Clarke.
Prerequisite: Learning Area (Primary): Mathematics 1 or approved equivalent.
Contact: 4 hours of lectures/workshops each week.
Timetable: Second semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate personal competence in all strands of primary mathematics;
- demonstrate a pedagogical knowledge of the content of the Number, Space and Chance & Data strands, emphasising an understanding of the major stages of growth of children's understanding and their difficulties;
- demonstrate a knowledge of methods, materials and activities which are appropriate for developing children's understandings in all strands; and
- demonstrate an awareness of and an ability to respond in teaching to important issues in teaching mathematics (including individual differences, gender, improving attitudes, technological change).
Content:
A further investigation of primary mathematics curriculum content and teaching methodologies. Students will explore fundamental concepts, generalisations, skills and applications through investigations in the Space and Chance & Data strands.
Assessment:
A 1000 word literature review on development of children's understanding related to a topic in Number, Space or Chance & Data (25 per cent). A 1000 word assignment documenting one issue in teaching mathematics and possible teaching responses (25 per cent). Preparation of a documented collection of resources for teaching a sequence of lessons on a specified topic for upper primary level, with a comprehensive rationale (2,000 words equivalent) (50 per cent).Hurdle Requirement: At least 90% proficiency on a set task covering all strands of the primary curriculum. A satisfactory completion of weekly tasks and seminar preparation.
