Teaching Methods Grad. Dip. Education subject.
Credit points: 10.0
Coordinator: Rod Fawns/John Werry.
Prerequisite: An approved sub-major in Science, Applied Science or Engineering, with at least one year of study in two approved Sciences, viz. Biology, Physics.
Contact: 2 hours of classes each week
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- describe a variety of approaches to the organisation of and strategies for teaching Science in Post-Primary Schools;
- demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the VCE Science study design;
- demonstrate a knowledge of available resources relevant to teaching Science in Post-Primary Schools;
- devise valid methods for diagnosis, assessment and evaluations in Science teaching at junior and senior levels;
- demonstrate the ability to plan a unit of work from the VCE study design for Science and junior science;
- develop personal skills in special areas through the demonstrations, elective programme and excursions.
Content:
Issues will include language in science, children in science, negotiating curriculum, Directorate of School Education initiatives, teaching techniques and inclusive curriculum, general science Year 11 and 12 science curriculum in schools including VCE, laboratory techniques and resources.
Assessment:
Essays and assignments equivalent to 4,000 words. (100 per cent)
