Teaching Methods Grad. Dip. Education subject.

Contact: 2-hours of classes each week.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students will be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge of the Victorian English Curriculum and Standards Framework;
- demonstrate an understanding of some major ideas about reading and writing processes and spoken discourse, including discourse in the classroom itself;
- demonstrate an ability to plan significant learning experiences for a range of students in a variety of settings;
- demonstrate a broad knowledge of, and interest in, text and texts of all kinds - film, literary text, young adult fiction, texts drawn from contemporary media and texts generated in a variety of classroom settings; and
- demonstrate a knowledge of various ways of assessing students' learning and evaluating classroom processes and materials.
Content:
A study of English learning and teaching in contemporary classrooms.Students will be introduced to the development of language in each of the four modes: speaking, writing, reading and listening; assessment and evaluation; various approaches to the teaching of written language; classroom management and organisation specific to the teaching of English; reading theories and processes; approaches to the teaching of text to adolescents; the English teacher's role in the whole school; resources - print and non-print - for English teachers; teaching English in the mixed-ability classroom; and teaching VCE English.
Assessment:
Essays and assignments equivalent to 4,000 words. Students must pass each assessment task.
