Teaching Methods Grad. Dip. Education subject.
Credit points: Single Method: 10.0, Double Method: 20.0

Prerequisite:
Single Method: Completion of three years of approved University language study at post-VCE level. Students with other qualifications will need to be assessed by a language department of an Australian University as being of equivalent proficiency.
Double Method: Single method requirements in two languages.
Contact: A 1-hour lecture and a 2-hour workshop each week. For the double method there will be a second 2-hour workshop weekly.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- plan, implement and evaluate individual lessons and units of lessons appropriate to the classes allocated to them, taking into consideration the level of interests and the needs of the students as well as the place of their particular LOTE/s in the overall school program;
- use appropriate classroom techniques to motivate and guide students towards communicative competence in the target LOTEs;
- devise a curriculum/syllabus for teaching their LOTE/s for Years 7-10 and Years 11-12 following the guidelines provided by the Directorate of School Education and Board of Studies;
- provide a written and/or verbal rationale for the teaching of LOTE in secondary school; and
- relate theoretical issues in human education, language acquisition and language learning to their own classroom situations.
Content:
A study of concepts and practices in second language teaching and learning, with emphasis on developing teachers as reflective practitioners, capable of fostering in their students communicative competence in a new language and of making the experience of language learning an educational one. Students will be introduced to commonly used texts and materials and will be taught a range of techniques for employing them.
Assessment:
Single Method: participation in class including completing nominated class tasks (30 per cent); assignments totalling approximately 4,000 words or equivalent for a practical assignment (70 per cent). Double Method: assignments to be completed for both languages.
